Multimedia journalist

Hi there! I'm a freelance journalist and communications specialist based out of Bozeman. As a Montana native, I enjoy reporting on the environment, outdoor recreation and the arts. I studied journalism, photography and communication design at the University of Southern California and when I'm not at my desk, you can find me out in the mountains playing or making art.

Wildland Firefighters: Slash and Burn?

Wildfires have become an increasingly dire problem facing the American West over the past two decades as a combination of climate-related changes and inadequate forest management have created the perfect conditions for large, frequent burns. To extinguish these fires—and to proactively mitigate fire risk before burns start—we rely heavily on the work of roughly 19,000 federal wildland firefighters who are currently facing a steep pay cliff.

New snowboarding film shifts focus from athletes to the landscapes they adventure in

“SOMOS,” directed by Rafael Pease, is narrated in Spanish with English subtitles and premiers in Bozeman on Nov. 9

In his latest short film, director and athlete Rafael Pease opted out of the traditional structure of ski and snowboard movies by situating the mountains as the main focus rather than the people exploring them. “SOMOS” is narrated by remote Alaskan mountains, and in this story, the mountains speak Spanish.

Montana unveils first wolf management plan update in 20 years

In Montana, gray wolves are about as controversial as they are stunning. The canids were effectively eliminated from the state by the 1930s due to hunting, and were only reintroduced following their 1973 listing under the Endangered Species Act. Reintroduction efforts in Greater Yellowstone beginning in 1995 were successful and wolves were delisted in 2011. As a result, rather than the federal government, individual states manage wolf populations within their boundaries.

About Me

I grew up in Big Sky, Montana, and was encouraged by my parents from a young age to follow my creative instincts and many curiosities, a path that naturally led me to writing. I moved away from the mountains to study journalism at the University of Southern California and later returned to my home state with a shiny new degree and desire to use storytelling as a tether between my outdoor and creative pursuits, and my career.

After a year covering local news, managing social media accounts and sending out daily newsletters for the Explore Big Sky newspaper, I set out on my freelance writing journey in the fall of 2023.

I believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools in enacting change. My primary focus at the moment is environmental storytelling based in Greater Yellowstone, one of the most unique and important regions in the West. My writing goal is to give readers a jumping off point for learning more about the various delicate threads that form the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem by providing the information and tools to participate in making change. As an added bonus, I get to expand my knowledge of and relationship with this special place that I call home.
